Writer's picture: Bryan MitchellBryan Mitchell

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT FORGIVENESS YOU

SHOULD ASK THE MASTER

“Then Peter came up and said to him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”

Matthew 18:21-22 (NIV)

WHAT JESUS IS TEACHING US ABOUT FORGIVENESS

I Must UNDERSTAND THE DEPTH OF MY DEBT

“‘Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.’”

Matthew 18:23-25 (ESV)

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

1 John 1:8 (ESV)

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 6:23 (NIV)

I Should ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMMENSE GRACE I’VE RECEIVED

“So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.”

Matthew 18:26-27 (ESV)

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace. Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalm 103:12 (NIV)

I CHOOSE TO PASS ON FORGIVENESS TO OTHERS

“But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’”

Matthew 18:28 (ESV)

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

CHOOSING FORGIVENESS BENEFITS MY LIFE

I AVOID THE TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES UNFORGIVENESS HAS ON MY FUTURE

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

Hebrews 12:15 (NIV)

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV)

I CAN EMBRACE THE FREEDOM FOUND IN FORGIVENESS

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

John 8:36 (NIV)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (NIV)

I SEE OTHERS THROUGH THE LENS OF MERCY

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:36 (NIV)

I CAN FIND RECONCILIATION AND HEALING

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (NIV)

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV)
