Unmistakable: Lessons For Life From 1 Peter #4 - Unmistakable Submission ... Unmistakable Success

Writer's picture: Bryan MitchellBryan Mitchell

Submission: an act of submitting to the authority or control of another

(Uypotassō) A military term meaning "to arrange [troop divisions] in a military fashion under the command of a leader". In non-military use, "a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating…"

Success: a favorable or desired outcome

  • FOR A CHRIST-FOLLOWER…

Success is not promoting self; it is exalting Christ.

Success is not securing a position; it is saving people.

So then, prepare your hearts and your minds for action! Stay alert and fix your hope firmly on the marvelous grace that is coming to you.

1 Peter 1:13

Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that do battle against the soul, maintain good conduct among the non-Christians so that though[c] they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears.

1 Peter 2:11-12 (NEB)

MY CALL TO SUBMISSION AND THE SUCCESS IT CAN BRING

1. AS A BELIEVER I AM TO SUBMIT TO GOD.

For the Lord's sake submit yourselves…

1 Peter 2:13a (ISV)

  • All other submission flows from my submission to Christ.

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

Romans 8:6-8 (NIV)

  • My submission success: God’s guidance, life and peace.

Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Romans 6:16 (NIV)

  • The real question is not will I submit, but to who will I submit.

2. AS A BELIEVER I AM TO SUBMIT TO THE GOVERNMENT.

For the Lord's sake submit yourselves to every human authority: whether to the king as supreme, or to governors who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right

1 Peter 2:13, 14 (ISV)

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.

Romans 12:1, 7 (NIV)

  • My submission success: I protect Christ’s name.

For it is God's will that by doing right you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

1 Peter 2:15 (ISV)

Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.

1 Peter 2:17 (MP)

  • Note: All are decisions and/or actions, none are feelings

Live as free people, but don't hide behind your freedom....Instead, use your freedom to serve God.

1 Peter 2:16 (GW)

3. AS A BELIEVER I AM TO SUBMIT TO MY BOSS.

You who are slaves must accept the authority of your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you--not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel.

1 Peter 2:18 (NLT)

  • My submission success: I receive God’s approval.

For God is pleased with you when you do what you know is right and patiently endure unfair treatment.

1 Peter 2:19 (NLT)

  • My submission success: I become more Christlike.

For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in His steps.

1 Peter 2:21 (NLT)

4. AS A BELIEVER I AM TO SUBMIT TO MY SKEPTICAL SPOUSE.

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands…

1 Peter 3:1 (NIV)

In the same spirit you married women should adapt yourselves to your husbands…

1 Peter 3:1 (Phillips)

  • My submission success: A greater likelihood of winning my mate.

so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives…

1 Peter 2:21 (NLT)
